Jack Thomas and Grace D'Souza have been shortlisted for awards in this year’s Enriching Student Life Awards (ESLAs).

Two students from the School of Journalism, Media and Culture have been shortlisted for awards in this year’s Enriching Student Life Awards (ESLAs).

The ESLAs, which are run in partnership between Cardiff University and Cardiff University Students’ Union, celebrate the work of staff and students who make a positive contribution to the student experience.

Final-year student, Jack Thomas, has been nominated for the Champion for Welsh Education award. This award celebrates a member of staff or a student who serves as a role model for Welsh Language Standards in Wales, provides information on the Welsh language and encourages students to use it. They also introduce people to the Welsh language by using incidental Welsh in conversation, create opportunities for people to engage with Welsh history and culture and encourage those who already speak Welsh to engage with their learning and teaching through the Welsh language.

Speaking of his nomination Jack, who’s studying Media and Communications, said:

“I was shocked to hear I’d been nominated and shortlisted for the award. It really is an honour to have this recognition and be named alongside great and highly respected individuals.

“The Welsh language is essential to me. It’s a part of my identity and my roots. University life can bring change to many people and for us as students, it’s a time to learn, develop and grow, but I think it offers an opportunity for the language to thrive and for us to hear the language being used widely. I love hearing Welsh being spoken along the University’s corridors, in the Talybont kitchens and in the SU on Wednesday nights.”

Another student who’s been shortlisted for an award is Grace D’Souza, who’s been nominated for the Students’ Union President’s Award. This award which aims to recognise students who have gone above and beyond during the year to make the student experience better for their fellow students. Grace has been nominated for the award for her role as the Mental Health Officer within the Students’ Union.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 9 May. Best of luck to Jack and Grace!
