SPARK welcomes SCALE – A new Research Centre for Social Care and AI Learning

8 April 2025

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the SCALE Centre for Social Care and AI Learning at SPARK this April. Funded by Health and Care Research Wales with a £1.8 million grant, the centre will explore how AI can improve social care practices for adults and children, while ensuring that ethical considerations are at the forefront.

Led by Stuart Allen, Professor of Informatics and Director of SCALE, the centre aims to build a strong evidence base for using AI in social care. Stuart says,

"I am really excited to be able to apply the expertise of the School of Computer Science to improving social care for adults and children. Our initial Welsh Summit on the topic generated many ideas for projects that could make a positive difference, and I can’t wait to get started."

The SCALE Centre is a collaboration between Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science, the CASCADE Centre for Children’s Social Care, and the CARE Centre for Adult Social Care Research. By bringing together expertise from across these disciplines, SCALE will address the opportunities and challenges posed by AI in social work.
