‘Translation and languages matter’ event explores their role in research and society
3 April 2025

The School of Modern Languages recently welcomed colleagues from the University of Leeds and the University of Bristol to participate in a seminar exploring the role of translation and languages in research and society.
The ‘Translation and languages matter’ event was organised by Dr Balsam Mustafa and School of Modern Languages PhD student, Morgane Dirion. Dr Neil Sadler (University of Leeds) and Dr Carol O'Sullivan (University of Bristol) joined a select group of translation studies scholars and delivered interesting and through-provoking talks on the topic.
In addition to the talks delivered by Dr Sadler and Dr O'Sullivan, attendees also heard from two of the School’s PhD students, Firial Benamer and Judy Murray. The talks were followed by a roundtable where topics included: telling and interpreting stories in the Twitter/X age, audiovisual translation and subtitling, and researching healthcare interpreting in South Wales. There were also discussions around language learning experiences of those with English as an additional language, within the context of Wales’s new curriculum.
The event was lively and interactive with attendees appreciative of the insightful talks and demonstration of the wide range of translation and languages research, as well as the opportunity to highlight its critical role outside of academia and importance to wider society.
