Eminent Welsh businessman and philanthropist Sir Stanley Thomas OBE (Hon 2011) has visited the Centre for Student Life to formally open the Sir Stanley Thomas Lecture Theatre.

In 2018, Sir Stanley Thomas made a transformational gift of £1.1m towards the creation of a new 550-seat lecture theatre, which now bears his name.

The lecture theatre is the University’s largest auditorium and provides an essential space for student learning at the heart of the campus.

The Centre for Student Life, which opened in 2021, brings together career guidance, financial advice, and wellbeing support, alongside vibrant study spaces that foster collaboration and academic success.

To recognise Sir Stanley’s remarkable generosity, a bronze bust was created by artist Hywel Pratley. The sculptor is known for crafting the first memorial statue of Queen Elizabeth II and has family connections to Wales.

The new artwork was unveiled at the opening ceremony, which was attended by esteemed guests including the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan Mrs Morfydd Meredith, the University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Wendy Larner, as well as former Vice Chancellor, Colin Riordan. Also present were former Welsh rugby international Sir Gareth Edwards CBE, Welsh singer and entertainer Max Boyce MBE, and presenter and entertainer Owen Money MBE.

Reflecting on the impact of Sir Stanley’s philanthropy, TJ Rawlinson, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, said: “Sir Stanley’s longstanding generosity and vision have left an indelible mark on our campus. His exceptional gift has enriched student learning and provided a world-class space for teaching. We are deeply grateful for his support and for the incredible community of donors who share in our commitment to shaping the future of education.”

Sir Stanley, who visited the Centre for Student Life during its construction, said: “It’s inspiring to see this iconic building alive with students, making full use of the spaces and services available. I’m proud to have played a part in making it a reality and I’m delighted that my gift will make such a difference to Cardiff’s students for generations to come.”

Philanthropic gifts play an important role in enhancing Cardiff University’s student experience and research capabilities. The University is profoundly thankful to all donors whose generosity continues to drive innovation and excellence in education.
