Silver Athena Swan awarded to the School of Computer Science and Informatics

5 February 2025

Our school has proudly received the Silver Athena Swan award, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within computer science and informatics.

We are extremely proud of this achievement, which underscores our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment within our school.

The Athena SWAN Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education and research.

Awards are granted to organisations who can demonstrate increasing levels of good practice in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in these areas.

Some of the measures highlighted by Athena Swan in their award were our increasing numbers of female academics and our outreach initiatives.

Christopher Jones, Athena Swan Lead in the School of Computer Science and Informatics, said: “The Athena Swan Silver award reflects the impressive progress we have made in the School in recent years improving our gender equality culture.

“This includes increasing the proportion of female academics, embedding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) awareness within many of our activities, our wide range of outreach for schools, multiple initiatives to support career development for professional and services staff, and the many LGBTQ related events organised for students.

“Our success in gaining the award is a credit to the amazing commitment to EDI among members of staff throughout the School, and to the dedicated efforts of the members of our Athena Swan self-assessment team.”
