Creating CPD for organisations, wherever they are in the world
19 February 2025

Our work is highly agile, enabling us to collaborate with organisations across the globe.
As part of our review of 2024, we're looking back at CPD projects and programmes designed for an international audience.
In 2024, we witnessed a strong resurgence of in-person international programmes, highlighting the enduring value of face-to-face engagement. However, even during exceptionally testing times, we find ways to deliver programmes, as demonstrated by our work with the British Council Ukraine.
We will take a global outlook and work to establish international partnerships that are genuinely reciprocal. We will embrace, prepare for and actively shape the future throughout our activities. We will be united by a mission to reshape, rewire and renew prospects not just for tomorrow, but far beyond.
In 2024, we welcomed several international delegations, strengthening the university’s long-standing partnerships with carefully selected institutions worldwide. One notable example is our collaboration with our strategic partner, Xiamen University. The CPD Unit worked closely with Cardiff Business School’s MBA Programme Director, Dr. Saloomeh Tabari, to design and deliver a bespoke Executive Education Summer School for Xiamen University MBA students.
We created a dynamic learning environment where professionals from diverse backgrounds could come together to learn, network, and share experiences. It encouraged participants to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application as they returned to their professional roles in China.
Building on the success of the Executive Education Summer School, we are excited to launch an open programme in June 2025. This new initiative will focus on leading through innovation, exploring transformative themes such as leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, AI and digital innovation, and sustainable business practices.
We designed the summer school model to be transferrable across other disciplines. We are currently working with the Digital Transformation Innovation Institute (DTII) to develop a similar week-long programme in AI, Tech Innovations and Leadership.
Further international projects followed, with a delegation from Shanghai SME Service Centre visiting in December. This bespoke programme, produced in collaboration with Cardiff Business School drew on topics included in various MSc programmes. Delegates immersed themselves in South Wales’ exciting business support and entrepreneurship ecosystem, sharing ideas and best practice between our two regions.
Our international work extends to online programmes, where we develop global training based on academic research and delivered by experts, to increase practical skills, abilities and knowledge. Read more about the impact of our flagship Dermoscopy programme (and the Practical Dermatology Postgraduate Diploma, both run by the School of Medicine) in our interview with Dr Pippa Bowes. Pippa shared why she chose the CPD course and how it has impacted on her professional practice.
The Introduction to Dermoscopy course proved really useful and beneficial; it improved my confidence and skills using a dermatoscope when checking skin lesions in patients. This improved the care I was able to offer my patients - I was able to reassure patients about benign lesions quickly and with confidence, reducing unnecessary biopsies. I would recommend this course to any doctor or specialist nurse who regularly sees patients with skin lesions.
In the Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE) College, we have further expanded our collaboration with a leading global mining company, enhancing the reach and impact of our successful online courses, Structural Geology for Exploration and Mining and Introduction to GIS Systems for Earth and Environmental Scientists.
In response to client feedback, we have been working throughout 2024 to repackage these programs into on-demand asynchronous courses. This approach allows us to create versatile learning materials that can be adapted to meet the needs of diverse customer groups, ensuring broader accessibility and greater flexibility for learners worldwide.
