Dr Alix Beeston Awarded Prestigious Senior Research Fellowship at Université Grenoble Alpes

6 January 2025

Dr Alix Beeston, Reader in Literature and Visual Culture at the School of English, Philosophy and Communication, has been awarded a Senior Research Fellowship at the prestigious Maison de la Création et de l'Innovation (MaCI) at Université Grenoble Alpes.

The fellowship recognises Dr Beeston’s innovative, interdisciplinary research and provides an invaluable opportunity for collaboration and development.

Dr Beeston’s work is at the intersection of literature, visual culture, and gender studies, with a particular focus on women’s contributions to film and literary histories.

Her fellowship project, Creativity in Motion: A History of Women's Unfinished Creative Labour, investigates the material realities and effects of women's creative work as they are revealed through unfinished projects.

Building on her previous research in this area, notably through her award-winning co-edited volume Incomplete: The Feminist Possibilities of the Unfinished Film, Dr Beeston’s work aims to intervene in debates among feminist scholars, artists, and audiences about how to account for women’s creative achievements without mythologising the artists or dematerialising their work.

During her time in Grenoble from February to April 2025, Dr Beeston will lay the groundwork for the next phase of her research into the unfinished works of US women artists and authors, including the filmmaker and writer Kathleen Collins and the writer Tillie Olsen.

As one of several international fellows in residence in Grenoble, she will collaborate with scholars and practitioners from a range of disciplines, enriching her research through international exchange and innovation.

The appointment exemplifies the School of English, Communication and Philosophy’s dedication to cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and global impact. Upon receiving the fellowship, Dr Beeston said:

“I’m honoured by this affirmation of the importance of my research into women’s unfinished projects and I feel very privileged to be afforded time and space to dedicate to this work. I’m particularly excited about being based at a dynamic research centre with such a strong sense of the value of humanities scholarship. I can’t wait to meet with and learn from the other fellows, local scholars and practitioners, and the staff at MaCI.”

The Senior Research Fellowship is a hallmark of MaCI's commitment to fostering creativity and interdisciplinarity across the humanities and arts.
