RemakerSpace: A year of community and sustainability

12 December 2024

Cardiff University’s RemakerSpace has become a dynamic hub for sustainability, creativity, and community engagement.

A thriving community hub

Since becoming fully operational in October 2022, RemakerSpace has evolved into a lively community hub, engaging hundreds of students and staff from across Cardiff University. Hosting everything from pop-up events and electrical repair workshops to monthly crafter socials, it has also played a key role in the university’s Positive Health and Well-Being (PHEW) Fortnight for two years running.

Commitment to sustainability

Championing the circular economy, RemakerSpace promotes reuse, repair, and recycling through hands-on workshops and innovative projects. Its commitment to sustainability cultivates environmental responsibility and aligns with Cardiff University’s broader green initiatives.

Collaboration

Collaborating with charities, businesses, and educational institutions, RemakerSpace has partnered with organisations like the university’s strategic partner, DSV, and Glory Global Solutions. They’ve also supported engagement events with the university’s Civic Mission teams and worked closely with colleagues across the university.

Professor Aris Syntetos, Director of RemakerSpace, said:

"We are thankful to all the staff and students who have joined our community over the past two years. Whether through small, one-off events or extended workshop groups, we are immensely proud of the dedication and creativity we've seen. We are grateful to have supported their efforts and helped bring their ideas to life."

Looking ahead

As 2025 approaches, the Centre is eager to expand its offerings while advancing sustainability efforts.

Professor Monjur Mourshed, Dean for Environmental Sustainability, said:

“I am proud of what RemakerSpace has achieved in just two years, establishing itself as a hub for promoting the circular economy. By offering training, resources, and expertise to staff, students, and the wider community, it has played an important role in advancing reuse, repair, and recycling initiatives."
Professor Monjur Mourshed Professor of Sustainable Engineering

He added: "The Centre's commitment to widening access to sustainability skills and fostering a culture of innovation exemplifies the values underpinning Our Future Together, Cardiff University's strategy for creating a sustainable and inclusive future. I wish RemakerSpace continued success in its inspiring journey."
