Philosophy has always concerned itself with the big problems concerning human nature and our place in the world. The School of English, Communication and Philosophy’s new degree programmes in philosophy bring this ancient and enduring subject directly to problems that society faces today.

In addition to the traditional focus on the core issues that define the discipline and how the greatest minds have tackled them, philosophy students at the School will learn how to communicate complex ideas in a variety of different formats and will explore how philosophy can inform collaborative decision making in businesses, charities, and government.

Dr Anneli Jefferson, Director of Studies in Philosophy, said: “We're excited to offer programmes that combine the rigorous study of philosophical questions with the real-world application of philosophical thinking and ideas. This ranges from developing the ability to write effectively for different audiences to thinking about policy recommendations for current societal problems.”

Cardiff University offers five undergraduate degrees in philosophy. In addition to the single honours Philosophy (BA) programme, there are 4 joint honours degrees: English Literature and Philosophy (BA); Philosophy and Linguistics (BA); Philosophy and Politics (BA); Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (BA); and  Welsh and Philosophy (BA).

All 5 programmes include practice and training in different forms of communication, in collaborative decision making, and in using philosophical skills and knowledge to shape strategic and policy decisions. All are open for student applications, with the first cohorts starting in September 2025.

The first cohort of the new master’s programme are focusing on honing their philosophical knowledge and skills. Next semester, alongside studying contemporary work in philosophy, they will be learning how to bring academic philosophers into collaborative discussions with members of other professions to address issues of common concern.

Dr Lucy Osler, Director of Philosophy (MA), said: “Our MA programme emphasises philosophy as a collaborative endeavour connecting our students with one another and to the world beyond academia. I am looking forward to working with our students next term on their ideas for events with external partners, exploring how we can put philosophy in action.”
