Dr Marco Jano Ito presents with a microphone

Dr Marco Jano Ito, Techno-economic and Lifecycle Theme Lead at Net Zero Innovation Institute (NZII) has presented research at the 21st EURECA International Engineering Conference at Taylor’s University in Malaysia.

The EURECA conference focuses on fostering knowledge and sharing experience on research in clean technologies, renewable energy, and innovations in industry.

Dr Ito participated in a panel discussion about the Ocean REFuel project, a five-year programme working to investigate the potential of harnessing offshore wind and marine renewable energy to produce zero carbon hydrogen and ammonia fuels.

This was followed by a discussion on the potential gaps between industry and research in universities and sustainability practices in everyday work. Dr Ito gave a keynote address, introduced the Institute, presented its goals and those of Cardiff University. He also focused on innovation related to sustainability, looking particularly at his work on techno-economics and the integration of this information to systems analysis and its meaning for researchers looking to do similar work in Malaysia. He concluded the presentation with potential applications to answering sustainability issues in Malaysia and the region.

Cardiff University has an active alumni network in Malaysia and an extremely active and enthusiastic Malaysian student society. It is wonderful to see that this visit by Dr Ito aligns with our aim to connect along these strategic Malaysian priorities with our partners in Malaysia – Taylor's University and Xiamen University Malaysia – to identify opportunities in sustainable development and net zero technologies.

Dr Ito will travel to Shanghai later in 2024 to present work on techno-economics at the Symposium on Ammonia Energy.
