1 August 2024
The Cardiff University Law Society had a fantastic year at 2024's Societies, Volunteering and Media Awards where they scooped a host of accolades.
The awards, which are run by Cardiff University’s Students’ Union, recognise the hard work and efforts put in by students, outside their studies, to volunteer and run a range of societies and groups for their peers.
Competition is fierce as there are over 200 societies on campus however, the Law Society picked up Course-based Society of the Year and Society of the Year (Big).
In the course-based category, the society were commended for their championing of diversity and inclusivity and growing their membership by over 25%.
The Society of the Year (Big) award is given to the society that has gone above and beyond, showing innovation and determination and conducting themselves with exceptional standards in everything they do. The Law Society were recognised in this category for having over 600 members and an incredibly dedicated committee, who run regular events of all different types. Their events are very well attended and sell out very quickly. Their Spring Ball made over £15,000 in 24 hours! Their President, Winky Yu, was also recognised externally and named Best Law Society President in the UK earlier this year at the Law Careers.Net Society Awards.
In addition to the award categories at the Societies, Volunteering and Media Awards, societies are encouraged to work towards earning medals within a tiering system. The Law Society earned the maximum amount of points and received a Platinum award this year.
President, Winky Yu said, “I am really thrilled that the Law Society has been recognised in this way. We have worked incredibly hard to make our society welcoming and inclusive to all law students so for others to acknowledge that is fantastic.”
