New Pathways to Music programme launched
10 July 2024
The School of Music is pleased to announce the launch of its innovative Pathways to a Degree in Music programme, designed to provide adult learners with a unique opportunity to transition into higher education musical study.
Representing Cardiff University’s commitment to making higher education accessible and accommodating for adult learners, the programme is particularly suited for those who have been away from formal education for several years, offering an alternative route to traditional A-level and access qualifications.
The Pathway mirrors the structure and assessment methods of first-year undergraduate courses, allowing students to experience the academic rigor and vibrant environment of degree-level music studies.
Successful completion of the programme guarantees an interview for admission to the undergraduate degrees in music at the School of Music, with comprehensive support provided for application and interview preparation.
The Pathway to a Degree in Music comprises three compulsory modules that cover a range of musical disciplines:
- The Language of Music: An introduction to music theory and notation.
- Investigating Music: History and Culture: A study of music’s historical and cultural contexts.
- Creative Musicianship: Focused on composition and performance, encompassing diverse musical styles and genres such as Western Art Music, popular music, jazz, and traditional music from around the world.
The programme is delivered part-time, with classes held in the evenings and weekends to accommodate busy schedules. A hybrid teaching format combines online evening classes during the autumn and spring terms with on-site Saturday ‘day schools’ in the summer term, creating a friendly and relaxed learning environment.
