Evidence Synthesis Essentials

29 July 2024

The Wales Centre For Evidence Based Care (WCEBC) has delivered two days of specialist training to clinicians and academics from The Order of Nurses, Midwives and Medical Assistants, Bucharest Branch (OAMGMAMR), Romania, as part of a formal mentorship agreement between the WCEBC and the Romanian Centre for Nursing Research.

The WCEBC was approached by the Romanian Centre to deliver this training in person.

The programme

The WCEBC has over 10 years’ experience in delivering the internationally recognised JBI comprehensive systematic review training and scoping review workshops. Additionally, the WCEBC team have developed successful online and face to face training courses for postgraduate students, academics and clinicians

Evidence synthesis essentials covered question development, search strategies, searching the literature, reference management, and systematic review tools.

The aim of the course was to

  • to teach participants how to develop a research question for a systematic review
  • to enable participants to construct search strategies across a range of databases
  • to guide participants in conducting thorough and systematic literature searches across multiple platforms
  • to equip participants to use the reference management software for the organisation, citation and management of references throughout the review process
  • to familiarise participants with systematic review software for citation screening

The course was delivered by Dr Deborah Edwards and Liz Gillen from WCEBC. The teaching was delivered through a mix of presentation, group discussions and practical sessions with the aid of simultaneous translation using local interpreters.

This course was a much-needed 'refresh', offering an enhancement in knowledge, networking, and news. It's like watching a good movie multiple times: each time, you take away something new and positive! It was interesting, constructive, and added significant value to our research activities. Thank you very much, Deborah and Liz! We are glad to have met you and hope to see you again soon!
