A Cardiff University professor has been appointed to provide an expert review of the Welsh Government’s Child Poverty Strategy monitoring framework.

Professor Rod Hick, a social policy expert, will advise government officials on the development of the Child Poverty Strategy monitoring framework, which seeks to measure performance against the Strategy, to help Welsh Government understand where children’s lives are improving and to identify areas where further policy attention is needed.

The Strategy aims to give coherence to initiatives to tackle poverty amongst children, young people and their families in Wales.

Professor Hick said, “I’m pleased to be working alongside Welsh Government officials in the important task of devising a monitoring framework to examine progress against the Child Poverty Strategy.

Children and young people deserve to develop to their fullest potential and, for too many, child poverty inhibits this. The Welsh Government’s commitment to tackle child poverty as an absolute priority is therefore welcome and a child poverty strategy, appropriately monitored, can play an important role in ensuring that policies seeking to tackle poverty amongst children, young people and their families are effective.

Professor Hick has worked on the measurement and monitoring of poverty for fifteen years. The Child Poverty Strategy monitoring framework, and Prof. Hick’s expert review of this, will be finalised in this summer.
