The Welsh School of Architecture hosts 2024 International CIBSE Technical Symposium.
7 May 2024
The Welsh School of Architecture was chosen to host the 2024 symposium, titled ‘Fit for 2050 - Delivering buildings and defining performance for a net zero built environment’, due to our resounding success at the 2023 CIBSE Performance Awards where we secured 3 awards for our established long term research and scholarship activities focussing on low carbon and net zero.
Over two days in April, the symposium brought professionals, academics, and researchers together to explore topics including the role of the digital revolution, impacts of climate change, occupant health and wellbeing, and building safety in the building services sector.
With a diverse range of presentations and panel discussions, the symposium provided insights into the cutting-edge practice and research shaping the future of the built environment. From exploring novel approaches to reducing carbon emissions to harnessing the potential of digital technologies for building performance optimisation, the symposium showcased the collaborative spirit and innovative thinking prevalent in the field.
The Welsh School of Architecture’s Director of Research and co-organiser of the CIBSE Technical Symposium Professor Jo Patterson shared that “it was inspiring to engage with a diverse range of people over the two days who obviously had real passion to push forward the net zero agenda. Collaboration and communication are key to supporting this, particularly at the pace that we need to deliver.”
We would like to thank Professor Patterson, Dr Emmanouil Perisoglou, and CIBSE’s Technical Director Dr Anastasia Mylona and her team for their efforts in coordinating this event.
As a city renowned for its commitment to sustainability, Cardiff was the ideal place to host this year’s symposium. As a School, our vision is to enable a sustainable built environment that enhances the wellbeing of present and future generations.
Our portfolio of taught postgraduate courses are designed to inspire high quality built environments and includes programmes in Environmental Design of Buildings, Sustainable Building Conservation and Sustainable Mega-Buildings.
