CUREMeDE’s previous research has highlighted the benefit of formal pharmacist training in general practice settings but also general practice teams’ limited familiarity with the pharmacist’s role and scope of practice.

In 2022, CUREMeDE were successful in securing a Cardiff University Innovation for All grant to conduct further researcher into pharmacists’ transition into general practice sessions and use the findings to develop a toolkit. The toolkit was aimed at general practice teams and aimed to aid them in getting the most benefit from this skill-mix opportunity.

The toolkit was made available online in 2022 and is available in both Welsh and English.

Last month, the results from the research that was conducted was published in the BMJ Open journal. The paper specifies three foundations to enable the effective integration and sustained contribution of pharmacists to general practice. The paper itself was developed by CUREMeDE researcher, Sophie Bartlett, CUREMeDE Director, Alison Bullock and previous CUREMeDE PhD student, Felicity Morris.

The full paper titled: It’s the stuff they can do better than us’: case studies of general practice surgeries’ experiences of optimising the skill-mix contribution of practice-based pharmacists in Wales is available now.
