University to host CIBSE technical symposium 2024 with focus on delivering buildings and defining performance for a net zero future

Practitioners from industry, academia and policy will consider the challenges and opportunities of delivering a net zero built environment that is fit for the future at an event hosted by Cardiff University.

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Technical Symposium will take place on 11-12 April 2024 at the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) where peer reviewed papers and presentations will outline developments in practice, technology and policy and the latest guidance for building services engineers will be showcased.

Practitioners will also receive up-to-date information about developments in meeting net zero carbon imperatives and digital innovations as well as sharing knowledge and best practice in creating healthy built environments.

The event follows Cardiff University’s success at the National CIBSE Performance Awards earlier this year, where the Low Carbon Built Environment (LCBE) Team took the honours for categories ‘Best Domestic Project’ and ‘Best Collaboration’ as well as overall ‘Building Performance Champion’ award for their work with the social housing sector in Wales.

LCBE project lead Professor Jo Patterson, Professorial Research Fellow at the WSA, said: “This year’s symposium will focus on defining and delivering building performance so that buildings, new and existing, are fit for the future, across a range of social, economic, and environmental contexts.

Anastasia Mylona, Head of Research at CIBSE, added: “CIBSE is excited to be hosting next year’s Technical Symposium at the WSA and for the first time in Wales. The aim of the Symposium is to advance the understanding of how the built environment can make a positive contribution to delivering net zero while also designing resilience into our homes and buildings in anticipation of likely changes in our climate. The WSA is well placed to help us achieve the Symposium’s goals and reach the wider research community.”

The organising committee are inviting papers that consider:

• the impact of social, environmental and digital change on redefining and monitoring building performance
• the role of digital technologies and modern methods of construction in net zero transformation and climate resilience
• health and wellbeing design standards, post-pandemic and in a changing climate
• the role of occupants in the effective operation of buildings
• meeting net zero carbon standards to address energy security and occupant safety

The call for abstracts is open until Monday 11 September 2023.
