New Head of School announced

5 June 2023

Dr Nicholas Jones (BMus 1994, MMus 1995, PhD 1999) has been appointed to the role of Head of the School of Music. He succeeds Professor Ken Hamilton and will begin the role on 1 August.

Nicholas is a Reader in Musicology and is currently the school’s Director of Performance. He has previously held the role of Director of Recruitment and Admissions at the school (2018-2021).

Nicholas’s research interests lie primarily in British music since 1900, especially Peter Maxwell Davies and Welsh composers William Mathias and Alun Hoddinott. His work focuses on music analysis and interpretation, sketch study and national identity, and landscape and place.

Speaking about his plans for the school, Nicholas said: "My association with the School of Music goes back over 30 years. I am therefore deeply honoured to be appointed as the next Head of School. I have always considered it a privilege to work with such talented students and dedicated staff, and I look forward to strengthening this association, as well as working closely with our alumni community and our partners, to continue to progress and support the school’s sustained future success."
