Negotiating the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement: 25 years on

27 February 2023

A public event at Cardiff University will mark 25 years since the signing of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, and will hear from a key UK negotiator who took part in the talks which paved the way for devolution, stability and the foundations of peace in Northern Ireland.

Professor Christopher Maccabe, who was Director of the Political Office of the Northern Ireland Office and a former Joint Secretary of the British Irish Intergovernmental Conference, will visit Cardiff on March 10th. Prof Maccabe was deeply involved in the negotiations, and will offer a unique insight and perspective.

Professor Niall O’Dochartaigh, of the University of Galway, has researched the negotiations extensively and will interview Prof Maccabe alongside Cardiff University’s Giada Lagana and Thomas Leahy, exploring the frontstage and back-channel dynamics which drove the talks towards an agreement.

Cardiff University’s Wales Governance Centre, the Centre of Law and Society, and the Irish Association for Contemporary European Studies (IACES) are co-hosting the event at the university’s Glamorgan Building, which will use the public interview format.

A warm welcome is extended to students, researchers and members of the public who can register to attend at this link.
