Spring into the Year of the Rabbit

22 January marks the Year of the Rabbit, and the team at Cardiff Confucius Institute would love you to join us in celebrating Chinese New Year.
Our tutors will be putting on a range of private and public events for the community and schools. These include special activities for local businesses, entertainment Chinese-style in local libraries, celebrations for Cardiff University students, and both in-person and online activities for schools.
In person community events
- Cardiff Central Library Hub and Cardiff Confucius Institute welcome you to their Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival Celebration on Saturday 21 January 12:00 – 15:00. Free activities and performances for all ages including music, Tai Chi, language tasters and mask making.

- Join the Chinese New Year Celebration at The Red Dragon Centre on Sunday 22 January 12:00 – 16:00. Cardiff Confucius Institute tutors will be celebrating with a mix of festivities including calligraphy, paper cutting, lantern making, storytelling, free entertainment and a special offer on food at the Volcano Restaurant.

- Cardiff Confucius Institute’s first Chinese Corner of 2023 will be all about Chinese New Year. This cultural talk, held on Wednesday 25 January 18:30 – 20:00, will explain the traditions of Chinese New Year and Spring Festival, investigate the origins of the festivities, and explore traditional folk songs, stories and cuisine.

- On Wednesday 22 February 18:30 – 20:00, Cardiff Confucius Institute will hold a talk on Chinese Festivals and Food. The presentation will explore important traditional Chinese festivals and the food eaten to celebrate them. This event will delve into the relationship between food and culture, the origins of Chinese cuisine and the regional differences in how food is produced and eaten.

Online and in-person activities for schoolchildren
- On Friday 20 January, the tutors at Cardiff Confucius Institute will be holding a Chinese New Year Online Festival for schools, where they will be streaming a diverse range of live interactive sessions for years 1-2 and years 3-6 1 in the morning, and secondary schools in the afternoon. As a teacher, you can sign up to use the live in-class sessions and get access to resources to share with your pupils. The sessions will be recorded and emailed to teachers in the following week.

- If your school is in Cardiff or the surrounding area, you can book two of our tutors for either a full China Day (4 contact hours) or China Half Day (2.5 hours) between 23 January and 3 February. Our tutors will deliver in-person or online sessions to your pupils (calligraphy, paper-cutting, Mandarin tasters, informational talks on the festival, storytelling and lanterns making).
Please note that these events are based on staff availability, and we will be asking for a contribution to cover our costs.
