WSA and RSAW host David Lea memorial event and exhibition
16 November 2022
To conclude the practice exhibition week, the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW) and the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) jointly hosted a memorial event and exhibition to celebrate and remember David Lea and his significant contribution to architecture.
David Lea was an architect who focussed on designing buildings that were in harmony with the natural world. Each project, whether built or unbuilt, demonstrated his determination to create low-impact buildings – at one with the natural world rather than at odds with it.
During the memorial event, guest speakers shared stories and experiences of their time spent working and collaborating with David during his career. Speakers included Benedicte Foo, Architect; Lecturer, John Sergeant, Architect; Lecturer, University of Cambridge and Patrick Borer MBE, Architect; Lecturer for the Masters in Sustainable Architecture at The Centre for Alternative Technology.
Head of the Welsh School of Architecture Professor Juliet Davis said:
"This event was organised collaboratively with the Royal Society of Architects in Wales to celebrate the life and achievements of the architect David Lea who passed away earlier in 2022. In place of a single memorial lecture, it included three short talks – each a distinctive personal narrative and perspective on David’s practice and the lessons it offers young designers at the start of their architectural careers today."
A recording of the presentations at the event is available below.
During October, the RSAW hosted a series of two exhibitions in collaboration with the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). The exhibitions showcased the work of practices across Wales and was an opportunity for students to find out more about practices in Wales and to meet with the project architects to start building connections.
