Bespoke training for healthcare regulator aims to develop skills in focus groups and data analysis for research

We recently supported the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE) to create a tailored 2-day workshop for Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW).
The programme aimed to develop skills and confidence in conducting focus groups and data analysis following good research practice.
The programme dovetails with the company’s 2022-25 strategy, specifically ‘working collaboratively to drive system and service improvement within healthcare’ and supporting and developing their workforce to ‘enable them and the organisation to deliver [their] priorities.’ Healthcare Inspectorate Wales Strategy and Operational Plan – strategy 2022-2025

Training took place at HIW’s own premises and was divided into two sessions, looking at running focus groups and qualitative analysis. The programme also included a group discussion to establish draft focus group guiding principles for HIW.
The focus group session covered critical practical areas of importance to HIW, such as strengths and limitations, ideal target numbers, strategies for discussion management, and ethical considerations.
The qualitative analysis session focused on content analysis, thematic analysis, inductive and deductive coding and writing up findings (including principles for representing the data accurately and persuasively).
The training, developed and delivered by Dr Dorottya Cserzo of CUREMeDE, was underpinned by practical and applicable research. About Dr Cserzo
Dorottya is a Research Associate at the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE). She carries out qualitative analysis (literature reviews, interview and focus group analysis) on various ongoing projects. Recently she has been involved in projects on professionalism in dentistry, healthcare regulation, and GP training in Wales. She contributes to teaching in the School of Social Sciences through guest lectures and undergraduate supervision. She is also involved with supervising intercalating and master's students in the School of Medicine.
