28 July 2022

Visualisation of people and data

A postgraduate student from Cardiff University has been recognised by the International Institute of Forecasters (IIF) for her outstanding performance in a forecasting module on a graduate-level programme.

Jiajun Ma, who recently completed the MSc in Sustainable Supply Chain Management programme at Cardiff Business School, is the recipient of the IIF Award 2022 from Cardiff University as part of an initiative rewarding top-performing undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The forecasting module, which is optional on the MSc Logistics and Operations Management and MSc Sustainable Supply Chain Management programmes, is an IIF student award unit.

Jiajun’s report used UK Government data related to COVID-19, including hospitalisation count, and positive count, and used it to forecast the next seven days of COVID-19 daily hospitalisation numbers. Written in Bookdown using R, Jiajun’s report visualised the data, produced forecasts, and evaluated the accuracy of different forecasting models.

Academic achievements

Jiajun will receive 100 US dollars, a Certificate of Achievement from the IIF, and one year’s free membership to the Institute.

The IIF is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1982, dedicated to developing and furthering the generation, distribution, and use of knowledge on forecasting.

“I'm glad to have received this award, and be recognised by my tutor and IIF! Even though the forecasting course was challenging, I learned a lot about utilising R and developing my data analytic skills. I am confident that this talent and the helpful resources from IIF will be useful to me in my future career and personal life.”
