School celebrates increase in Research Power in REF 2021

The School of Physics and Astronomy sees research power almost triple since REF 2014.
The School has received a GPA score of 3.45 in REF 2021, with 99% of our overall submission considered world-leading or internationally excellent.
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) assesses the quality of research in the UK Higher Education sector, assuring us of the standards we strive for.
Our commitment to ensuring a diverse, inclusive and collaborative environment is reflected in our score for research power (an indicator of the scale and quality of our submission), which has almost tripled since REF 2014.
Professor Peter Smowton said: “The excellence and expertise of the staff in the School of Physics and Astronomy have been rewarded by the success of our 2021 REF results. I am proud of and grateful for the work everyone has put in to make these REF results possible.”
The School of Physics and Astronomy is a key member of many international scientific collaborations. Together they are pushing the envelope of research, development, and understanding of fundamental physical principals, new technologies, and the cosmos itself.
