12 May 2022
The School of Chemistry has been recognised for its research excellence in the REF2021, with 99% of our submitted research being classed as world leading or internationally excellent.
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) assesses the quality of research in the UK Higher Education sector to ensure standards and quality are maintained. The REF outcomes are also used to inform the allocation of around £2 billion per year of public funding for universities’ research.
We are delighted that our research excellence has been recognized with 99% of our submitted research being considered world leading or internationally excellent.
We have also been recognised for the impact of our research, with 100% of our impact considered outstanding or very considerable in terms of its reach and significance. This reflects the way our research has been used to address major challenges facing society, the economy and our environment.
Head of School Professor Damien Murphy said: “In order to represent the diverse, collaborative, and inclusive qualities that represent us as a School we submitted 100% of our eligible staff for REF 2021. This further underlines the success of our REF results. I would like to congratulate all members of staff across the school and affiliated research institutes for their contribution to our excellent result.”
Working in close collaboration with leading industry partners, School of Chemistry researchers have found solutions to environmental, technological and sustainability challenges facing the globe.
