School of Biosciences achieves outstanding REF 2021 results

12 May 2022

We are ranked 7th for research impact and 8th for research power in Biological Sciences in the UK

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 results published today showed that 88% of research activity in Biological Sciences in Cardiff is officially world-leading or internationally excellent according to the latest independent assessment of research quality across UK higher education institutions.

We have been ranked 8th in the UK for research power, which is an indicator of the scale and quality of our REF submission.

Our impact position of 7th in the UK reflects the vital role our researchers play in tackling the world’s greatest challenges. Examples of this range from the protection of endangered species to the management of healthy freshwater ecosystems and the improved detection, monitoring and treatment of HIV, influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

“We are proud of our fully inclusive REF submission, our supportive environment and deeply embedded culture of research excellence which is demonstrated by our position as 8th in the UK for research power. Our research plays a vital role in tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges and its far-reaching and varied impact is further recognised by our impact ranking of 7th in the UK and 3rd in the Russell Group of research-intensive institutions. This follows our success as 4th in the UK and 27th in the world in Biological Sciences in last year’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects."
