School of Biosciences achieves outstanding REF 2021 results

We are ranked 7^th for research impact and 8^th for research power in Biological Sciences in the UK

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 results published today showed that 88% of research activity in Biological Sciences in Cardiff is officially world-leading or internationally excellent according to the latest independent assessment of research quality across UK higher education institutions.

We have been ranked 8^th in the UK for research power, which is an indicator of the scale and quality of our REF submission.

Our impact position of 7^th in the UK reflects the vital role our researchers play in tackling the world’s greatest challenges. Examples of this range from the protection of endangered species to the management of healthy freshwater ecosystems and the improved detection, monitoring and treatment of HIV, influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

We foster an inclusive, diverse and collaborative research community. Reflective of this, we submitted 100% of our eligible staff for assessment.
