Cardiff University Rifle shooters shine at BUCS Small Bore Championships
Cardiff University students, Dean Bale and Ruth Holloway, competed against the best student rifle shooters in the country at the BUCS Small Bore Rifle Championships held at Appleton Rifle Club, Warrington. The competition consisted of 40 shots at 50m and 40 shots at 100 yards with competitions for teams, pairs and individuals.
Dean won gold in the individual competition, while Ruth finished a fine fourth in the women’s competition missing out on third by two points. The duo were also competing in the pairs competition where they finished second, narrowly missing out on the win by only one point. A fantastic achievement in both their first BUCS small bore competition. Ruth said “All in all it was a really fun event and it’s great to be returning to Cardiff with Dean as the British Universities Small Bore Champion!”
Dean and Ruth, who are both part of the University’s High Performance Sport Programme, gained at total of 24 BUCS points to add to Cardiff’s point tally, currently ranking Cardiff University 10th in the UK in the BUCS points framework.
This recent success backs up Cardiff University’s win against Swansea University in the rifle competition at the annual Welsh Varsity which took place last Wednesday.
Both students are in action again this weekend with Ruth competing in the English Championships and Dean is representing Great Britain at the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.
