The Wolfson Centre for Young People's Mental Health is holding an online webinar to celebrate Youth Mental Health Day this September.

Researchers from the Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health will be presenting an evening of talks to coincide with the charity stem4’s Youth Mental Health Day.

The awareness day’s theme is year is #StrideForward. stem4, a charity that supports young people to build positive mental health, is the founder of Youth Mental Health Day in the UK, which started in 2020.

The webinar, taking place on the 7th of September, will include three short talks followed by a Q&A session.

The talks will cover topics such as the impact on familial depression in the transition to adulthood, programmes and resources to support young people and their families when facing mental health challenges and how the Wolfson Centre's research can inform and evaluate youth mental health policy here in Wales.

Talks will include:

  • Dr Chris Eaton- Developing policy to improve the mental health of young people in Wales.
  • Dr Vicky Powell- Investigating the link between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and depression.
  • Dr Yulia Shenderovich- Parenting programmes and supporting youth mental health.

Professor Stephan Collishaw, co-director of the Wolfson Centre, said: “We are excited to be holding a series of talks to mark stem4’s Youth Mental Health Day.

“1 in 5 young people in Wales reported high levels of mental health problems prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and rates of problems have since increased further. There has never been a more pressing time to work to improve youth mental health.

“We hope these talks will be of interest to young people and their families, as well as academics, clinicians and third sector organisations."

It’s really important to us as a research Centre that we offer accessible and informative resources on adolescent mental health and engage with and involve the public, especially young people, in our work.

"This online event will be the first of many from the Wolfson Centre over the coming years and with this year’s Youth Mental Health Day theme of #StrideForward, we couldn’t think of a more appropriate awareness day to celebrate as we aim to take major steps forward in mental health research, to improve the lives and wellbeing of young people.”

Dr Nihara Krause, stem4 Founder/CEO and Consultant Clinical Psychologist, added: "After the impact of disruptions such as online learning, isolation, alternatives to exams and assessments and the loss of momentum and structure, it is more important than ever to place a focus on the mental health of young people. Youth Mental Health Day aims to bring the whole of the UK together in providing an opportunity for this aim, so we are delighted that the Wolfson Centre is marking the occasion with a series of talks on improving youth mental health in Wales and beyond."

Striding forward for youth mental health is a free online event taking place on the 7th of September from 18.00-19.00. The virtual event is open to anyone who is interested in attending.
