Did you know...?
4 February 2016
Today is World Cancer Day - a day when the world’s population unites in the fight against cancer.
More than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime and many of us have been affected by this terrible disease in one way or another.
Cancer survival in the UK has doubled in the last 40 years and, in England and Wales, as many people survive cancer as die from the disease. But there is still a lot of work to be done.
Did you know…?
The European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute at Cardiff University is dedicated to understanding the causes of cancer and developing new and more personalised therapies for cancer patients.
Our innovative and cutting-edge cancer facility specifically focuses on the idea that cancer stem cells are responsible for the spread and regrowth of cancerous tumours, and that targeting these will revolutionise the way we tackle cancer.
Did you know?
- Our team of leading researchers has developed a novel therapeutic compound with the potential to treat the most aggressive forms of breast, pancreas, colon and prostate cancers. This has been licensed to a pharmaceutical company for development and is due to enter clinical trials in 2016
- Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Our scientists have devised a ‘stem cell’ test which could predict which breast cancers will respond to certain therapies, and also help to identify the most aggressive forms of the disease. We expect to see this test in clinical trials very soon.
- Pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates in Europe and early diagnosis is incredibly difficult. At the Institute, we have invested in cutting-edge equipment to look at individual cancer cells during the early stages of pancreatic cancer, with the ultimate aim of establishing earlier diagnosis of the disease and developing new and more effective therapies.
- We are also committed to inspiring the next generation of cancer researchers, with an active outreach and engagement programme for schoolchildren and adults. Here at the Institute we have developed an educational board game, which helps players understand more about how cancer grows and spreads around the body.

You can make a difference.
As a charitable organisation, we rely on voluntary support to fund our research. Please help us in our fight against cancer by donating either a single or regular gift, of any size, to the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute. All gifts are hugely appreciated, but regular donations are particularly helpful as they allow us to plan ahead.
Every single penny donated will be spent in our laboratories, enabling us to carry out further lifesaving research.
Together, we can make a difference.
