Pharmabees attend beer festival
9 March 2020
The Pharmabees team have held a stall at the Cardiff University Real Ale, Gin and Cider Festival in the Student’s Union building. The event took place on 27th and 28th February in the Great Hall and was well attended by both staff and students alike.
The Pharmabees were on hand to talk about the antibacterial properties of honey and botanicals that made up the ingredients of their Mêl Beer, which they were selling at their stall to raise funds for their educational activities. The beer was an initiative between the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Bang On Brewery, an SME based in Bridgend to raise awareness of the Pharmabees research into honey through an innovative pathway. Research at the School of Pharmacy has found certain types of honey and botanicals have antimicrobial compounds, and these natural agents have been incorporated in their beer.
Professor Les Baillie, the academic lead of the Pharmabees project said of the event, “We wanted to attend this event to support the Student’s Union but we’ve been very pleasantly surprised by how many students have come to talk to us, who had already heard of our research. Some have even volunteered to become STEM Ambassadors. This is a very good example of research leading learning, and very encouraging for our project.”
