CITER Soc Scientific Workshop 2019

This year’s CITER Soc scientific workshop organised by postgraduate committee members took place on Wednesday 11 December 2019 in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University. The theme of the workshop was “drug delivery in science and health”. The workshop is targeted at A Level pupils with an interest in studying a medicine related degree and also to members of the CITER network. Forty two pupils attended the workshop from four secondary schools including Radyr Comprehensive School, Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales School, Whitchurch High School and King Henry VIII School.
The programme included talks given by leaders in novel areas of cutting edge science, interactive sessions including debate sessions and engagement activities. The engagement activities provided an opportunity for pupils to learn about using medicinal maggots in wound healing, the skill of surgical suturing, special simulation glasses that simulate eye diseases and visual impairments to experience first hand the impact these common conditions have on sight, rehabilitation in terms of capturing the tiniest body movement by attaching wireless motion sensors to the front and back of the body whilst playing an interactive game grounded in movement sciences and physiotherapy to enable standardised, objective analysis of movement performance as well as understanding “the circulatory system and drug delivery using 3D models.
"Aimed at the right level to allow understanding of the concepts being discussed but also challenge most students, giving them chance to come away with questions that they can research further or discuss in class".
Many thanks to our keynote speaker Professor Arwyn Jones, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cardiff University for sharing his research and delivering a highly informative talk. Also thanks to our invited guest speakers in Cardiff University including Dr Elaine Ferguson in the School of Dentistry, Dr Siân Morgan in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences and Dr Alex White in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Furthermore to the Biomechanics & Bioengineering Research Centre Versus Arthritis and external company BioMonde for exhibiting as part of the interactive sessions over the lunch and break times.
