CITER Annual Scientific Meeting 2019
25 September 2019
The Cardiff Institute for Tissue Engineering and Repair Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) took place between 23 -24 September at the Swansea Marriott Hotel, Swansea. The meeting is held for our members including academics, early career researchers, MSc students, PhD students and undergraduates as an opportunity for researchers and clinicians from across the network to discuss the latest research findings in the broad research areas of Stem Cell Science, Tissue Engineering and Repair and Disease Translation.
The Programme for the two day science and networking event included talks delivered by our key note speakers Professor Ivan Wall, Aston University, Birmingham and Professor Sian Harding, Imperial College London; early career researchers, bursary awardees, invited colleagues from supporting Schools in Cardiff University including Professor Stan Maree, School of Biosciences, Professor Peter Kille, School of Biosciences, Dr Jennifer Edwards, Cardiff Catalysis Institute, Professor Phil Stephens, School of Dentistry, Professor David Williams, School of Dentistry, Dr Wayne Ayre, School of Dentistry, Dr Valerie Sparkes, School of Healthcare Sciences, Dr Andrew Staphnill, Research Innovation Services, Carl Smith, ISSF Wellcome Trust Engagement Officer who delivered an interactive session as well as Dr Ilyas Khan from Swansea University.
Alongside the meeting was a poster exhibition area for PhD, MSc and CITER's undergraduate Summer student bursary students as well as a sponsored exhibition area. The poster exhibition provides an invaluable opportunity for younger scientists to present their research findings and discuss with delegates.
As part of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine MSc course students attend the meeting and present the research following their five month laboratory-based research project within the CITER network.
A networking session with refreshments took place in the exhibition space prior to the evening meal. This afforded delegates the opportunity to informally engage with professionals within their field, network with colleagues and to increase their awareness of research within the network in a relaxed environment.
During the evening dinner the two annual CITER awards were presented to this years awardees. The CITER Young Investigator Award was awarded to Dr Daniel Morse and the CITER Contribution and Engagement Award was awarded to Dr Siân Morgan. Many thanks to members of the Executive Committee and Research Committee for judging the entries.
A prize presentation took place in the final session for the best poster and best talk over the two days. The prize for the best poster was awarded to Ceindeg Arwel and the best talk was awarded to Dr Daniel Smith.
CITER would like to thank the keynote speakers for their time and delivering informative and excellent presentations on their respective research. Also to our invited speakers for sharing their research and to our sponsors for attending and providing funding support including Thermo Fisher Scientific / VWR, Cambridge Bioscience, Peprotech Ltd and Promega UK Ltd.
