The School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies welcomes new Welsh language lecturer

Respected ITV journalist Sian Morgan Lloyd’s arrival is set to boost Welsh language teaching at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

The School’s practical Welsh language module Yr Ystafell Newyddion (The Newsroom) has proved popular with the School’s Welsh speaking students. Now in its second year the module has grown to span two semesters.

Sian, who was a guest panellist at the launch of the School’s Joint Honours degree BA Welsh and Journalism last year (pictured), brings a wealth of experience and has worked extensively across the Welsh language media industry.

As lead reporter on 'Y Byd ar Bedwar' Sian made over 70 programmes during her time at ITV. Her reporting career includes covering the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 in Cairo; the devastation wreaked by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines (Bafta Cymru winner 2014); the disappearance of April Jones in Machynlleth and exclusive interviews with the families of miners who died at Gleision colliery.

Director of Undergraduate Studies Dr John Jewell said, “Sian’s arrival further underlines our commitment to the development of skilled and trained Welsh language journalists, who are essential to supporting a healthy and effective Welsh media industry.”

Sian, who will play a key role leading and teaching on the BA Welsh and Journalism, joins Welsh language academic lecturer Siân Powell. Sali Collins, who previously held the position, now teaches on the MA Broadcast Journalism degree.

Sian said of her appointment, “I feel delighted and very privileged to be joining the team at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. There is a demand for Welsh speaking journalists within the media and I hope that my experience in the field will enrich the popular modules already established.

“I look forward to developing Welsh language provision further and contributing to the excellent reputation of the school and the experience of students who study here. My aim is to inspire young people to have confidence in their ability to work in the industry."
