CITER Research Workshop - Digital Technology Rehabilitation

A CITER research workshop was held on Wednesday 10 April in Hadyn Ellis Building, Cardiff University for its members as well as members of CITER's external network MediWales. The theme of the workshop was Digital Technology Rehabilitation. Digital technology applications in rehabilitation have become increasingly popular for addressing clinical problems. Its overall aim was to foster knowledge and experience exchange on how various technologies can uptake rehabilitation and patients’ quality of life.
This workshop brought together communities from researchers, technologists and clinicians to meet and discuss the benefits and drawbacks that digital technology may bring to the rehabilitation field, gain insights into the latest developments, share knowledge on overcoming challenges and barriers to the development of digital technology applications related to rehabilitation and to suggest research topics that should be tackled in the near future.
As part of the workshop there was an exhibition area for sponsors, a stand from the Arthritis Research UK Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre, Cardiff University and a demonstration of the CITER virtual rehabilitation movement games outreach activity. Furthermore delegates were encouraged to bring a poster of their research which gave delegates the opportunity to network and discuss the poster over break times and during the lunch time. Congratulations to Shaima Aljahdali, PhD student, School of Healthcare Sciences for winning the poster competition.
There was a full programme and the talks delivered from current users of digital technology were interesting in terms of the types of research which have been conducted to date and informative in learning the development of plans for establishing a cross-disciplinary research related to rehabilitation. Thanks to our keynote speakers Professor Lynne Baillie, Heriot-Watt University and Emer Doheny, University College Dublin. Professor Baillie's talk was on "designing and testing novel rehabilitation technologies in the home”. Emer's talk was on "wearable sensors for human movement analysis: applications in wellness and health”. Furthermore thanks to our external guest speakers Sara Brammall, Summit Medical and Scientific and Dr Rob Orford, Welsh Government as well as Cardiff University colleagues including Professor Petroc Sumner, School of Psychology, Dr Liba Sheeran, School of Healthcare Sciences, Dr Kate Button, School of Healthcare Sciences, Dr Phillipa Jones, School of Engineering, and Kevin Nicholas, School of Healthcare Sciences and NHS.
