Law Society prize for senior lecturer
28 May 2019
Cardiff and District Law Society has named David Dixon, Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University’s School of Law and Politics, as the recipient of the Simon Mumford Memorial Award 2019.
The prestigious award, established in 2015, is presented annually to a lawyer who works or resides (or has done) within the Law Society’s South Wales constituency area. It is given in recognition of the recipient’s contribution to the Law and the legal profession.
David, who has taught on the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at Cardiff University since 1993, is a much valued, and respected, member of the Cardiff legal community. He is highly regarded by colleagues, students and alumni, and has a long history of accomplishment and advocacy.
Responding to the news of David’s achievement, LPC Course Leader, Byron Jones, said: “David has been a great servant to the legal profession nationally and locally over many years. He was elected three times as the Law Society’s Council member for South Wales, serving with great distinction for 12 years until 2018. He has also sat on several Law Society committees including the Wales Committee (as Chair between 2010 and 2014), the Education and Training Committee and the Housing Committee.
“In addition to his ongoing teaching work, David remains active beyond the lecture theatre and has undertaken much work in promoting Wales within the Law Society in London – helping to secure the naming of the David Lloyd George room in its HQ – and in championing Welsh issues more widely.”
In conclusion, Byron added: “David’s achievements are extensive. It is therefore entirely fitting that he should receive this prestigious honour and be celebrated for his hard work, commitment and dedication to the Law and legal practice. It was heartening to see, at the award ceremony earlier this month, the deep affection in which he is held by the legal community in Cardiff. As a School, we thank him for his contributions and congratulate him on this award.”
Prior to joining the then University College (Cardiff) in 1993, David spent more than a decade in private practice and local government. In his almost 27 years of teaching, he has helped educate and train thousands of students and shows no signs of reducing his workload. He remains the course leader for the compulsory course in Litigation and the elective course in Commercial Litigation on the LPC, and for Public Law on the Graduate Diploma in Law.
