Academics honoured

The Learned Society of Wales has named 11 academics from Cardiff University among their newly elected Fellows.

Forty-eight new Fellows have joined the Learned Society of Wales this year from across the arts, humanities, sciences, and beyond. Each new Fellow has contributed to the world of learning as researchers, academics, and professionals – and all come with a strong connection to Wales.

Professor Stuart Palmer, Chair of Council, and one of this year’s elected fellows, said: “It’s a great honour that the Learned Society of Wales has recognised me and so many of my colleagues at the University.

“The Society plays a vital role in promoting the nation’s research and maximising its reach. I look forward to supporting this important work alongside a distinguished group of people who have contributed so significantly to the advancement and application of research in Wales and beyond.”

Election to the Fellowship is a public recognition of excellence, is keenly competed, and takes place following a rigorous examination of each nominee’s achievements in their relevant field(s).

This year’s fellows have been selected from Schools across the University. The Systems Immunity Research Institute had cause for celebration with 4 new fellows in their team.

Among those joining the Fellowship this year:

1. Professor Davide Bonifazi, Professor of Organic Supramolecular Chemistry in the School of Chemistry
2. Professor Samuel Evans, Head of the School of Engineering
3. Professor Sophie Gilliat-Ray, Professor in Religious Studies and Theological Studies, and Director for the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK (Islam-UK)
4. Professor Simon Jones, Dean of Research, and Research Theme Lead for Infection, Inflammation & Immunity, the Systems Immunity Research Institute
5. Professor Malcolm Mason, Professor in the School of Medicine
6. Professor Paul Milbourne, Head of the School of Geography and Planning
7. Professor Bernhard Moser, Systems Immunity Research Institute, School of Medicine
8. Professor Stuart Palmer, Chair of Council
9. Professor Ian Weeks, Systems Immunity Research Institute and Dean of Clinical Innovation in the School of Medicine
10. Professor Susan Wong, Clinical Professor in the Systems Immunity Research Institute, School of Medicine
11. Professor David Wyn Jones, Professor in the School of Music

Sir Emyr Jones Parry, President of the Learned Society of Wales, said: “I am delighted to welcome 48 new Fellows to the Society.
