Uniting students and nursery children through art
8 April 2019
Cardiff University students have created a mural to decorate the entrance to the University’s Day Care centre.
The mural, designed with input from Cardiff University Art Society, was painted by students under the guidance of Bradley ‘RMER’ Woods, a local graffiti artist.
Children from the Day Care Centre also participated by adding the finishing touches with their own handprints. It was a day of creative collaboration between students and the children, culminating in a celebratory event hosted by the Day Care Centre with support from the Baking Society.
The creative project aimed to provide students with the chance to show off their artistic abilities while developing their planning and team-working skills.
BAM, the construction company building the Centre for Student Life, invited children onto the site to meet the construction team and learn about the project.
Jacqui Kempa, manager of University Day Care Centre, was enthusiastic about the project, saying: “We’re always looking for new and interesting ways to engage our nursery children in creative activities.
“When we heard the students wanted to help brighten up the fence separating the nursery and the Centre for Student Life construction site, I thought it would be a great opportunity to involve the children as well.
“I love the design created by the students. It makes a real difference to the nursery entrance and the children are proud to have been part of it.”
Psychology student and Art Society member, Molly Delooze, said: “I’m really proud to say I helped paint the mural, it looks fantastic. It was an interesting project that brought students together for something worthwhile. The kids seemed to love the opportunity to get their hands messy when they were adding their handprints and turning them into sea creatures.”
