Eisteddfod 2018

The Eisteddfod came to Cardiff Bay in 2018, and staff from the Medicines Discovery Institute took part in the celebration to share the Institute’s research.

The celebration of Welsh art, literature, music and language spread out in front of key Cardiff landmarks, showcasing Welsh culture through the historical festival. Academics from Cardiff University took part in the festivities to share their work through the medium of Welsh.

Staff from the institute demonstrated concepts of drug discovery through interactive activities in the science tent at the festival, communicating with the public about how the institute is using research from Cardiff University and taking it from the lab bench to the patient.

Professor Simon Ward, Cardiff University’s Medicines Discovery Institute, took to the stage at Cardiff Bay to promote the vision of the institute, translating scientific research into novel therapies.

“It was an incredible honour to be a part of the Eisteddfod, celebrating Welsh culture. I was given the opportunity to show the role cutting-edge Welsh research plays in Wales’ reputation across the World.

“Cardiff University is producing world-leading research, including in the field of drug discovery.

“With the World’s population increasing and aging, it’s vital that we improve our treatments for the World’s biggest health problems.

“At the Medicines Discovery Institute, we are taking research and applying it to create novel therapies, especially in areas like cancer and mental health.

“The Eisteddfod gave us the opportunity to share our work through the Welsh language, and celebrate Welsh scientific research alongside Wales’ iconic language, culture, music and art,” said Professor Simon Ward.
