School of Modern Languages celebrates success in annual student survey

The School of Modern Languages has achieved a significant increase in student satisfaction in this year’s National Student Survey (NSS) results.

Published annually, the NSS asks undergraduates to rate their University experience in categories that include teaching, academic support and personal development.

90% of our final-year undergraduate students were satisfied with their overall experience at the School which is a substantial improvement from 83% in 2017. Overall satisfaction is one of seven thematic areas of the survey and the vast majority of these areas saw a positive increase in rating for the School in NSS 2018.

Professor Rachael Langford, Head of School, said: “We take student feedback very seriously and we are therefore delighted to see our students rate the School of Modern Languages so highly. We are a student-focussed community with very good facilities for teaching and learning. Our graduates are excellent linguists with great intercultural skills and graduate prospects. Over the last few years staff have worked intensively in partnership with our students and the university to enhance our students’ experience of teaching and learning, and we will continue to do so in response to student feedback.”

The School of Modern Languages was rated highly in a number of specific areas:

• 97% of students expressed that they were able to contact staff when they needed to.
• 96% of students felt that staff were good at explaining things.
• 94% of students said that access to library resources and specialised resources supported their learning.
• 91% of students felt that they had the right opportunities to provide feedback on their courses.
• 90% of students praised their feedback as timely.
