The project “Computing Craft: manufacturing cob structures using robotically controlled 3D printing” will be led by Dr Wassim Jabi from the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, in collaboration with Plymouth University and will start in January 2018, following the announcement of £72,845 of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding through the “Connected Everything: industrial systems in the digital age” programme. It leads on from an ongoing research collaboration between Cardiff and Plymouth, which is currently supported by the Chartered Institute of Building.
Researchers will investigate fabrication procedures and methodologies for robotically supported 3D-printing utilising cob and similar clay-based sustainable building materials. The Welsh School of Architecture’s Kuka KR60 industrial robotic arm will be used to produce the cob and clay structures that will be examined during the 18-month project.
