Genetics standalone postgraduate modules

Cardiff University’s School of Medicine is known for its world-class research and training facilities.
We’re very proud to offer a range of flexible standalone postgraduate courses in genetics and genomes taught by experts in their fields.
Our programme includes three courses specialising in genetics:
Counselling Skills in Genetic Healthcare (20 or 30 credits)
Practical Skills in Genetic Healthcare (20 or 30 credits)
Genetic Science for Health Professionals (20 or 30 credits)
This programme stands apart from other training providers because you can choose whether to take a module worth 20 or 30 credits - it’s entirely flexible, and allows you to study around your work and life commitments.
Counselling Skills in Genetic Healthcare
Summary: Designed to enable development of your counselling skills with a mix of theoretic and practical work.
Aimed at: Practitioners, genetic counsellors or any other health professional working with families affected by a genetic condition.
How is it taught? Face to face teaching block (3 days) and private study
Genetic Science for Health Professionals
Summary: Provides an understanding of the basic mechanisms of human genetics and inherited genetic disease. Covers main structures and functions of human genome, chromosomes and protein-coding genes, molecular and structural basis of many human mutations, and how they are mapped, characterised and diagnosed.
Aimed at: Developing Practioners’ skills in a clinical setting, and healthcare professionals who work with individuals who have/are at risk of a genetic condition. Also suitable for specialists (see course breakdown for more information).
How is it taught? Live online webcast sessions
Practical Skills in Genetic Healthcare
Summary: Designed for healthcare professionals to build a foundation of knowledge and skills for work in genetic healthcare. Includes practical clinical skills, as well as scientific concepts in genetic healthcare and use of counselling skills.
Aimed at: Healthcare professionals working in primary care or specialist areas (see course breakdown for more information).
How is it taught? Blended learning – Live online webcast sessions, face to face teaching block (3 days) and private study.
