25 scholarship winners for Cardiff University
29 June 2015
25 prospective students who intend studying in Cardiff University have been awarded Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Scholarships for 2015/2016
Nearly 180 students in total across Wales will benefit from receiving extra financial support during their time at University thanks to the Coleg Cymraeg Scholarship Scheme.
Each individual will receive £1,500 or £3,000 over three years and they will be asked to complete a period of work experience through the medium of Welsh and sit the Welsh Language Skills Certificate as a result.
The scholarships were awarded this year to students in universities across Wales who will study a wide variety of subjects. Cardiff University's prospective students intend studying Law, Politics, Genetics, Sociology, Medicine and Welsh.
A new opportunity for medical students
For the first time this year, Medicine was eligible for a Scholarship of £1,500 and one who took advantage of this opportunity was Sean Downes from Morgan Llwyd School in Wrexham. Sean won a scholarship to study in Cardiff University:
''The Coleg's Scholarship will be a great help to me and studying part of the subject through Welsh will enable me to deal with patients confidently. The application process was simple and both short and long term advantages are worth while.''
In Cardiff University students can study up to a third of their degrees in Medicine and Healthcare Sciences through the medium of Welsh. As a result we can provide the NHS in Wales with a Welsh speaking workforce which means patients can speak to practitioners in their mother tongue.
Masters Scholarships
The Coleg Cymraeg also offers Master's Degree Scholarships worth £3000. The closing date for the 2015/2016 Master's Scholarships is 13 July 2015 and you can apply via the Coleg website.
