Crime and Security Research Institute visits Namibia with the Phoenix Project

Dan Grinnell, a Research Associate at the Crime and Security Research Institute has visited the Namibian capital, Windhoek, as part of, and funded by the Cardiff University Phoenix Project.

The aim of the visit was to improve understanding of Road Traffic Accidents, by creating an improved dataset for research and operational analysis.

The Phoenix Project is 4 years into a 9 year partnership with University of Namibia (UNAM) with a Memorandum of Understanding running until 2022.  Led by Prof Judith Hall, the vision is Poverty Reduction and Health promotion and works with the Welsh Government’s Wales for Africa programme to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

During Dan’s visit he worked closely with Windhoek City Police to analyse the data surrounding Road Traffic Accidents in the capital, and pull it into a more structured, easily mappable format to use both for research and to inform future interventions. Locations of all the Road Traffic Accidents in Windhoek 2017 were mapped and analysed to create a baseline, and also inform the creation of a data entry system for future use by City Police.
