CITER exhibits at the 2018 Science in Health Live! Event
16 March 2018
Cardiff Institute for Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER) exhibited at the Science in Health Live! event which took place between 14 - 15 March in the School of Medicine, University of Hospital Wales.
The event is targeted at A-level students who are interested in studying medicine and gives them an insight into the science behind medicine, showing them the range of career options open to them in healthcare, biomedical and scientific fields. Over four hundred and fifty A-level students from across Wales attended the event each day together with sixth form teachers.
It involves over one hundred and fifty members of staff and students within Cardiff University at all levels from post-graduates to Professors, representing the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Optometry and Vision Sciences and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. CITER demonstrated two outreach activities; "operation man" and "blast-a-biofilm". The "blast-a-biofilm" workshop is a hands-on activity developed to introduce microbes and biofilms. Biofilms are common in nature and, as the favoured mode of growth for microbes, biofilms affect many parts of everyday life. This activity requires participants to first build, then attempt to ‘blast,’ a biofilm, thus enabling the robust nature of biofilms to become apparent.
The outreach activities were well received by the visitors to the stand. Many thanks to all the CITER volunteers who participated over the two days, the success of these events relies on our volunteers. Participation in public engagement is fun, increases confidence and overall a good experience. If you would like to participate in future public events and school visits please email;
