Free half marathon places
5 February 2018
Cardiff University is offering runners free entry to one of the UK’s biggest half marathons while raising money for vital health research.
Limited free places are available for the 2018 Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon to those who pledge to raise funds for the University’s cancer and neuroscience/mental health research.
All 100% of the funds raised by the University’s #TeamCardiff runners will go towards this work.
Cardiff University is once again partnering the half marathon as title sponsor. This year’s race – which celebrates its 15th anniversary - takes place on Sunday 7 October.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan said: “Our researchers are tackling major global health challenges so the money raised from #TeamCardiff is invaluable.
“I would urge anyone considering running the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon to consider supporting our cancer/neuroscience and mental health research.
“Thank you to those of you who have signed up for #TeamCardiff already; your efforts could make an enormous difference to people’s lives.”
Some 350 University staff, students, alumni and members of the public ran as part of #Team Cardiff last year and raised £65,000, breaking the £100,000 barrier over the past two years.
The funding supports researchers to advance the understanding and treatment of cancer and neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease.
Director of the Wales Cancer Research Centre, Professor John Chester, said: “I see the impact that donations have across the breadth of our work, as they enable researchers examining cells in the labs, scientists discovering treatments and developing trials, and clinicians treating patients.
“Your support could empower individuals to make preventative lifestyle choices, or contribute to kinder, targeted treatments for vulnerable patients, or give families extra time with their loved ones.”
#TeamCardiff runners must pledge to raise at least £200, or £150 for students.
The 2018 #TeamCardiff launch event takes place on Thursday, 15 February in the University’s Viriamu Jones Gallery, Main Building, Park Place from 17:30 to 19:30.
Anyone interested in running for #TeamCardiff is invited to drop in to find out more. Potential runners can also take advantage of a free health check and running advice from our Sports department.
#TeamCardiff runners’ packs consisting of a technical running t-shirt, water bottle and fundraising pack will also be available for our registered runners to collect on the night.
