Success for student societies
11 May 2015
Congratulations to all the music students and societies who have won awards at the Societies Awards 2015. These awards, run by the Cardiff University Students' Union, celebrate the many societies run through the Union.
Cardiff is home to a diverse range of musical societies so there are always plenty of opportunities for music students to get involved. These societies are very active and offer a range of exciting performance opportunities. It is great to see that the hard work of so many of these societies has been recognised this year.
Cardiff University Operatic Society won the Best Small Society category, undergraduate student Katie Blackwell was runner-up for the Committee Member of the Year award for her work with the Society, and the production of The Fairy Queen at The Gates Art Centre was runner-up for Best Cardiff Fringe Festival Event.
A whole host of music societies came together to hold a Music Showcase during the Cardiff Fringe Festival earlier this year, including Blank Verse, City of Cardiff Concert Band, Healthcare Music Choir, Jazz Society, Music Society, and the Operatic Society. This successful event won Best Society Collaboration.
The Cardiff University Jazz Society has been having a busy year, including a Latin Fever in 60s Jazz concert during the Fringe Festival and regular Jam Nights around Cardiff. Society members will be taking the Big Band on tour to Belgium in July to perform various gigs in Dinant, Brussels, Bruges, and the Gent Festival. The hard work and commitment of the Society's members was been recognised when the Society was runner-up for Committee of the Year.
Winners of The Societies Awards were announced at The Societies Ball on 8 May 2015.
