Workshop on schizophrenia and related disorders

Applications are now open for a ‘Workshop on Schizophrenia and Related Disorders’, which takes place on 6-13 June 2018 in the USA.

Organised by Professor Jeremy Hall, Director of Cardiff University’s Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute, this course will provide students with a current understanding of the molecular, cellular and neural systems underlying the disturbances in brain function in a range of devastating illnesses.

Genetics and Neuroimaging

During the 7-day workshop, students will learn about the clinical aspects of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder as well as explore in detail the genetic and neurobiological underpinnings of these complex psychiatric disorders.

Session topics will focus on: The Clinical Syndrome, Basic Neurobiology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuroimaging, Genetics and Genomics, Endophenotypes, and Gene Expression and Gene Modulation.

Supported by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Stanley Foundation, the workshop will be held at the Laboratory’s Banbury Conference Center located on the north shore of Long Island, USA. All participants stay within walking distance of the Centre, which is close to a tennis court, pool and private beach.

Understanding schizophrenia

Course instructors include Professor Jeremy Hall, Akira Sawa, from John Hopkins University in MD, and Anissa Abi-Dargham, from Stony Brook University in New York.

Teaching Assistants will also be on hand for support, including Nicholas Clifton, from Cardiff University, and Kristen Delevich, from University of California Berkeley, CA.

“Not only will participants be able to enjoy learning about the most recent and engaging theories into neurological disorders, but they will also be invited to challenge controversial topics and meet potential collaborators to strengthen their own research and better understand schizophrenia and related disorders.”
