School of Music graduate appears in series of musical TV adverts

School of Music alumna Nicola Dempsey, one half of musical comedy duo Flo & Joan, has appeared in a series of national TV adverts.
Sisters Nicola and Rosie wrote and performed three original songs for Nationwide Building Society, the first of which, ‘Crimbo Limbo’, debuted over the Christmas period.
Speaking of the collaboration, Nicola said “Nationwide wanted to continue their ‘Voices Nationwide’ campaign which they ran last year featuring poets and spoken word artists, but this year using musicians instead. We submitted some songs to them and it turns out that they liked them so we wrote them a few more!
“We were really lucky that we were able to write and perform our own songs. We’ve never done any television work before, so the experience has been very exciting for both of us.”
The piano/percussion pair have played to sold-out audiences across North America and the UK. Flo & Joan have contributed material to BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’ and ‘Fresh from the Fringe’; and have featured on Funny or Die, Comedy Central and the AV Club.
They performed sold-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016 and 2017.
Flo & Joan have an upcoming run of performances at London’s Soho Theatre in February and will be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in summer 2018.
Nicola graduated from the School of Music in 2012 with a BA in Music.
