Don Barry (1944-2017)
15 December 2017
It is with great sadness that Cardiff Business School received news of the death of Don Barry on 1 December 2017.
A lecturer in Economic History and Director of International Student Recruitment, Don passed away peacefully whilst on holiday in Spain.
Don had a long association with Cardiff University, stretching for nearly 50 years until his retirement in 2012. During this time, he established himself as an inspirational teacher and mentor though he will be especially remembered for the key role he played in developing international student recruitment.
A key contributor
The success he achieved in encouraging potential students to apply to Cardiff Business School, rather than a competitor institution, was exceptional especially in the key markets of India and China and is a key contributor to the success the School has subsequently achieved.
The increased resources that came with vibrant international student numbers enabled the School to invest in an academic faculty that ranks so highly in international research league tables.
He was moreover, instrumental in changing the nature of international student recruitment with his involvement, through advice and encouragement, in the establishment of one of the top student recruitment agencies in China and the development and expansion of others in India.
Don is survived by his wife, Lynda, their children, Jonathan and Caroline, and their families. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and colleagues alike.
