Connecting to our wifi

Last updated: 18/09/2024 16:19

We recommend all students and staff connect to our on-campus wireless network, eduroam.

As well as providing the most secure connection, eduroam covers all University buildings, University-managed accommodation and the majority of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board sites. Once connected, your device should stay connected for 12 months.

If you have trouble connecting to eduroam, or need quick and easy access to the internet for a short period, you can use your University email address and password to connect to CU-Wireless. The CU-Wireless connection will need to be renewed every 12 hours. Note: CU-Wireless is not available in some Cardiff & Vale Health Board locations.

Read our IT regulations which apply to all students.

For enhanced security, the eduroam network requires a security certificate to be downloaded and installed on your device.

Some older devices may not be compatible with the eduroam network due to outdated network drivers or lack of compatibility with modern networking equipment. Check our IT Device support statement for details.

We recommend that your device’s operating system is up to date with all the updates and patches installed and that you have applied the latest wireless network drivers to the device beforehand.

Connecting to the eduroam wireless network

Follow the instructions below for setting up your device to connect to eduroam.

These instructions will guide you through the process of downloading and installing the Cardiff University certificate (eduroam configuration profile) which is required to connect to eduroam.

The certificate is valid for 12 months, so you will need to repeat this process every year for each device connected to eduroam.  You will receive a reminder email just before the certificate expires.

Before you start

You need an active internet connection to complete the eduroam setup process.

If you are not currently connected to the internet, select ‘CU-Wireless' from your list of available networks on campus and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the CU-Wireless (daily) option.

Stolen Device Protection feature on iPhones 17.3 and above

Please note that a feature on iPhones running version 17.3 or later, known as Stolen Device Protection, limits the functionality of your iPhone when in unrecognised or unfamiliar locations. One of the limitations is downloading certificates, which are required for onboarding to eduroam.

If your device does not recognise your current location as a familiar location, we recommend that you set aside one hour to complete this process.

After the hour security delay has expired, you will be presented with ‘Time Sensitive’ messages stating that the security delay has ended. You may need to start the process again.

Instructions

  1. In your Safari browser, go to https://onboard.cardiff.ac.uk.
  2. You will be asked to enter your full University email address and password and confirm the device operating system has been correctly selected.
  3. Click Log in.

The next steps describe how to download and install the Cardiff University certificate (eduroam configuration profile).

  1. Select Install Profile to configure your device.
  2. You will be presented with a pop-up, asking you to download/install the University’s eduroam configuration profile. Select Allow. If you're presented with a Stolen Device Protection message see guidance under ‘Before you start’.
  3. At this point, the eduroam profile is downloaded. You now need to manually install it within the next 8 minutes. To do this:
    • Open the Settings icon from the home screen.
    • On the left-hand side of the screen, select Profile Downloaded.
    • Select Install on the eduroam install profile screen.
    • Enter your phone’s passcode, if prompted.
    • Select Install from the following pop-up messages.
    • Once the profile is installed, select Done.
  4. You have now downloaded and installed the certificate and should be automatically connected to eduroam. If you are not automatically connected, select ‘eduroam’ from your network list within Settings > Wi-Fi.
  5. Important: To avoid being prompted to re-connect to the ‘daily’ option, please ensure you ‘forget’ the CU-Wireless profile from your list of available networks:
    • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
    • Select the blue circular ‘i’ icon next to ‘CU-Wireless’.
    • Select Forget This Network.
    • Ensure there is a blue tick next to the eduroam network. This shows that you are connected and will remain connected for 12 months.

Get online in your University-managed accommodation

The eduroam wireless network is available in all University-managed accommodations and remains our recommended network. As with elsewhere on campus, if you have trouble connecting to eduroam, or need quick and easy access to the network for a short period, you can use CU-Wireless using just your University email address and password.

Each room in University-managed accommodation also has a wired connection if required.

You can connect your devices via a wired ethernet connection by following the same instructions as connecting to the wireless network.

You can connect other wireless devices such as smart speakers and gaming consoles to the CU-PSK network. Instructions are available on the student intranet.

Gaming consoles connected to CU-PSK may experience a limited online gaming experience due to our corporate network structure and firewall policies. Check our IT Device support statement to find out if your gaming console meets the minimum requirement.

Only 'eduroam', 'CU-Wireless', 'Dev-Setup' and 'CU-PSK' wireless networks are operated and maintained by University IT. Do not try to connect to any other network unless you have been authorised to do so by the person responsible for that network.
